Skill Cards:
There are 2 types of Skill Cards in Heroes of Might and Magic. First, there are Primary Skills which allow a Hero certain special abilities, but have no pre-requisite. Below is a diagram you can refer to when the rules mention the entries on primary Skill Cards.
You will notice, that the Primary Skill card can be rotated to change its Level from Basic to Advanced. When you advance to an even higher proficiency, you will discard the Primary Skill Card and play a new one that has the Expert level of the same skill. The 5 levels of a Primary Skill are Basic, Advanced, Expert, Master, & Grand Master.
Secondary Skills are the second type of Skill Cards. Secondary Skills allow even more special abilities, but require that you have a particular Primary Skill to use them. As you gain proficiency in a Primary Skill, your proficiency in its related Secondary Skills will increase automatically. Below is a diagram you can refer to when the rules mention the entries on both types of Skill Cards.
You will notice that the effects of this Secondary Skill Card change based on your current skill level in Tactics. Tactics is the Primary Skill one must have in order to use Defense.
