Sylvan Intro
Reminiscent of the Heroes III Rampart Town, except for the Dwarves and Pegasi, the Sylvan Town is a fast faction with an abundance of flyers and ranged attackers. The Heroes II Druid makes a return as a creature, but has a very different appearance. Sprites, the perennial level 1 creature for the Nature Town, are a great addition to the speed of the town. This is somewhat counteracted by the gargantuan Treants, who make their first appearance in a Heroes game, but are similar in nature to the Dendroids. The Sylvan is a very well-balanced town with a mixture of speed and power. Perhaps the only area lacking is their magical capacity.
How to read this page
Most of the elements describing the creature should be quite familiar. However, if they're not, here's what you should know:
  • The Attributes panel presents the creature's attack, defense and such. Position your mouse over an element to display the tooltip if you're not familiar with the icon.
  • The Economics panel shows the cost of the unit, and its weekly growth rate.
  • Move your mouse over the abilities to show the description popup.
  • Casters have a spellbook: it opens as a popup to show the creature's spells. The little icon  next to the spell name represents the creature's mastery of that spell, ranked from None to Expert. Click on a spell to go to the corresponding spell page.
  • The Experience value is the amount of experience your hero will gain when killing one creature of that type.
  • The Power Rating is a global indicator of the creature power. It allows you to roughly compare different creatures, even if, of course, there's no such thing as a unique strategy and power ladder in Heroes 5!!

Pixie
Pixie
The Pixies are the guardian spirits of the Kersyls, the giants trees that host the Sylvan cities. They live in the trees' branches, tending them in exchange for shelter and sustenance. These creatures are not dedicated to war, but they will defend their home fiercely. Their swift attacks can hit more than one creature, and their small size and speed make retaliation impossible.

The Pixie is a very quick and devastating level 1 flyer, especially when factoring in its No Retaliation ability. Though it does not deal much damage, or even have good attack and defense ratings, it is capable of doing damage in numbers due to its initiative and Spray Attack. It is understandably expensive.

Sprite
Sprites are close relatives of the Pixies who live in the higher branches of the Kersyl trees. Their small size and speed allow them to attack more than one creature and to retreat before retaliation is possible. Also, the Sprites' affinity with the woods is such that they can call upon Nature's powers to cast spells in combat.

The Sprite is an excellent upgrade, the only level 1 creature capable of casting spells. It is a much more versatile creature, and has better attacking abilities with 50% more damage, as well as doubled attack and defense values. Initiative has also been increased by 2, giving it more opportunities to attack. All this comes for only 20 extra gold - a definite upgrade.

Blade Dancer
Elite among sylvan warriors, certain Elves dedicate their lives to the intricate Elven martial art known as the Battle Dance. Relying on evasion and quick action rather than resistance or brute force, Blade Dancers wear no armor, and are therefore exposed to enemy strikes.

While the lack of specials (0) is disheartening for the Blade Dancer, there are a number of redeeming features. It has fairly good attack and defense skills, and deals very good damage for level 2. Like the Sprites, it has excellent initiative, though not quite as good Speed. Its Hit Points are rather slight though.

Not only does the War Dancer provide sufficiently good statistical upgrades, it also comes with the War-Dance combo - a Hydra-like mechanism allowing it to attack adjacent units. Its greatly improved damage allows it to deal easily the most of any level 2. In addition, its initiative is outstanding, allowing it to flee from the scene if it is low in numbers. Hit Points could have been increased slightly to make it more sturdy. Nevertheless, another very rewarding upgrade.

Hunter
In times of peace, the Hunters supply the Sylvan communities with food, and they are respected for their skills and prowess. Wandering Irollan, they live in harmony with Nature and its unwritten laws. They will never kill a living being without purpose. In times of war, however, they have no compunction about using their talents to strike down enemies from afar. Their uncanny affinity with their enchanted Elf bow allow them to fire two shots before an enemy can even blink.

While dealing less damage than the War Dancer, the Hunter has two shots, and a respectable 10 initiative - excellent for a shooter. Its 12 shots ensure its longevity, but its 10 Hit Points do not. If engaged, their frailties are exposed and they die quickly - only buy them if you are sure you won't be against any fast fliers.

The Master Hunter offers increased damage and drastically increased defense, as well as the Warding Arrow specialty. There are not too many changes in this upgrade, though it is more durable as it has more Hit Points (though only a touch more) and of course defense. This upgrade can wait.

Druid » Comment » Attributes
The Druid is very much a ranged attacker in both senses - magic and physical. With low attack and defense ratings, it is really forced to rely on its spells, primarily. Hit Points are quite commendable for an un-upgraded level 4, but it doesn't make it any more sturdy in melee combat.

Druid Elder » Comment » Attributes
The Druid Elder is a huge improvement in the damage sector. With a 50% increase in attack and defense ratings, as well as boasting the highest average damage for a level 4, the Druid Elder is a much better fighter than their younger brethren. However, its speed has dropped, and, quizzically, it has lost 1 Hit Point. A good upgrade - middle priority.

Unicorns deal good damage, even though their attack and defense ratings are low for level 5. They are fast, flank creatures that can also stay back to assist with magical protection against a spellcasting Academy or Dungeon army. Its Hit Points are quite good, making for an above-average level 5 walker - an excellent addition to an up until now weak melee army.

Silver Unicorn » Comment » Attributes
Aside from the Blind specialty, which can be a timely ability, the Silver Unicorn is a predominantly toughening upgrade - increasing only attack, defense, and Hit Points. This simply strengthens Sylvan's tank unit, making it more durable in long combats, which, in turn, buys the ranged attackers more time. Both the Unicorn and Silver Unicorns 'Aura of Magic Resistance' specialty is difficult to make use of due to their tendency to attack. The Silver Unicorn is a value-for-gold upgrade - one well worth making.

It is said that when the first Elves ventured into the heart of the primordial forest, they found the Treants there, waiting for them and ready to vow their undying loyalty. Treant » Comment » Attributes
The Treants are the brick walls (thought they don't look it) of the Sylvan army, standing to protect the frail ranged attackers that lie behind them. The Treant is obviously a defensive unit, as its monstrous defense rating suggests. It also has 175 (!) Hit Points, 35 more than the nearest other level 6. It does, however, deal level 5-like damage. Its initiative is also poor, though its speed is fairly good. Entangling roots can cause pain for the enemy - since the Treant won't be going anywhere soon.

Ancient Treant » Comment » Attributes
The Ancient Treant is simply a bulked-up version of the Treant. With a gigantic 181 Hit Points and 29 defense - which rivals some level 7s - it is an even tougher obstacle to overcome. Damage has been upgraded to level 5+ standard to make the Ancient Treants even more deadly, though their attack is still a disappointing 19. The Take Roots ability makes them even tougher to overcome, though they become the target of powerful elemental chains. They are incredibly cheap, too, at only 1500 gold.

The Green Dragon has the most Hit Points of any un-upgraded level 7, and although it is a bit light defensively, its high initiative is a factor in dealing the most possible damage before taking a hit. Acid Breath compensates for its low damage output sufficiently, as does its attack rating. The Green Dragon is a balanced and very fast level 7.

The Emerald Dragon, in direct competition with the Black Dragon for top dog due to the fact that it has almost 50% more initiative, is another fast flyer which can tie up enemy shooters, preventing them from attacking Sylvan's own shooters. It is betrayed by its low Hit Points and poor damage range, though. Immunity to Earth is a narrow but nonetheless useful ability to have in reserve.

Sylvan Analysis (by ThE_HyDrA)
Walker: 6
Shooter: 4
Flyer: 4
Spellcaster/-: 3

Total Orientation: Once again showing to be a quick and agile town able to strike quickly through the use of sprites, war dancers, green dragons, and unicorns, also have creatures that can attack from the rear such as druids and hunters. Their only weakness is a lack of magic, seeing as the druid is only a level 4 creature. The Sylvan Town can defend nearly as well as they attack, with the likes of emerald dragons, ancient treants, and silver unicorns stationed at a garrison.
